With over 3,000 users on our platform, the state of Texas represents a fairly sizable portion of our student base in the Southwest U.S. However, that number continues to grow daily. Surgeons, pediatricians, mechanical engineers, and registered nurses comprise the most sought after professions of STEM Premier students in Texas.
Geographically, a large portion of STEM Premier’s students reside in the Dallas-Ft. Worth and Houston areas, but our student presence stretches across the entire Lone Star State from Amarillo in the North to McAllen on the U.S.-Mexico border. Like other states in our database, female student profiles outnumber males 57% to 43%, which continues to be encouraging news about a range of professions and industries historically considered to be dominated by men.
In Texas, student interest in STEM had outpaced the national average for the past five years, according to ACT and their report on The Condition of STEM. That’s great news for the region, though not surprising given the high amount of investment that the state has made in STEM education.
The Texas Education Agency recognizes schools throughout the state designated as T-STEM Academies. These schools have undergone a rigorous designation process and they focus on improving instruction and academic performance in science and mathematics-related subjects and increasing the number of students who study and enter STEM careers. These T-STEM Academies are further supported by the Texas STEM Coalition which operates seven STEM Centers throughout the state. These centers work with the 100+ T-STEM Academies to further improve learning and strengthen curricula.
